I’m sure that quite a few of you are transplants from “up North” to sunny Florida. Remember those snow days that you loved because it was a fun day off from school or work? There is no reason not to take a snow day here – and enjoy it in Delray Beach at 50 Ocean.
There may be more sand than snow at Delray’s most glamorous oceanfront restaurant, but it’s still a good place to take that snow day during these cool holiday months. General Manager Mark DeAtley has unveiled his winter cocktail menu which I find perfect for those with visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads.
The Spicy Gingerbread cocktail reflects the season with a shaken combination of Stoli Vanil, Frangelico, and butterscotch schnapps. The spirits are poured into a highball glass with ice, topped with ginger beer, and garnished with a cinnamon stick. “Most Floridians come from somewhere else, and many hail from the North,” says DeAtley. “This drink is warm and soothing, just the thing for those chilly nights from December through March.”
Few libations convey the essence of the tropics better than the mojito. The classic Cuban highball combines rum, mint leaves, simple syrup, lime juice, and soda for a refreshing and invigorating palate pleaser. 50 Ocean’s Holiday Mojito adds muddled cranberries for visual appeal and a balancing edge of tart winter fruit.
The official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby gets an inspired treatment in the restaurant’s Woodford Frost. Godiva white chocolate liqueur, cream, and peppermint schnapps are shaken with Woodford Reserve, then strained into a martini glass, and garnished with a pirouette cookie and shaved dark chocolate. “This cocktail is in the tradition of classic cream drinks such as the Brandy Alexander,” says DeAtley. “It’s rich and satisfying, and provides better protection against the cold than wearing a sweater.”
Located above Boston’s on the Beach, the casually elegant 50 Ocean offers spectacular, panoramic ocean views through a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, and exquisite cuisine with exciting, local influences, beautifully presented by a knowledgeable and seasoned staff. 50 Ocean also includes the chic Hemingway Lounge, a private dining/wine room perfect for special events, business lunches, and celebrations. An outside patio with understated style is the hot spot for a weekend brunch, featuring bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys, and a build-your-own Grey Goose Bloody Mary bar.
I highly recommend that you come for the cocktails and stay for the meal. The food at 50 Ocean is seasonal, fresh and local! Only the very best ingredients available are used to create their dishes. The contemporary menu features fresh local seafood, tropical salads and uniquely crafted desserts.
